Time is the most valuable asset we have. We can invest it, spend it, use it, or waste it, but no matter what we do with it, we can never get it back. Any return on our investment of time depends entirely on what we do with it.
As Boomer and Late-Boomer women, we've been given a precious gift. More time.
In the year 1900, US government statistics tell us that women of color were dead by age 43 and white women by the age of 51. Of course, there have always been individual women who lived long lives. Grandmothers, great grandmothers, wise women, and aged relatives often stretched the boundaries of life expectancy.
But never entire generations of women. Most women didn't live past menopause. No wonder menopause was seen as a harbinger of impending death.
We are the first generations of women in the history of humanity to live into this new post-menopausal life stage. We have been gifted another 20-30 years to become our most powerful, authentic, soulful, fulfilled selves.
What do you want to do with your gift of 20 years?
C.G. Jung, one of the fathers of archetypal psychology, wrote that to maintain cultural balance, the focus, and determination needed to become your most authentic self, must be countered by the gifting of your authenticity, power, and agency to society for the greater good.
There has never been a greater need for the gifts of the archetypal feminine, such as compassion, empathy, understanding, creativity, nurturance, strength, resilience, respect for the natural world, the balanced use of resources, and planning for future generations.
" . . . Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
With your one wild and precious life?"
Mary Oliver
Whatever it is you are dreaming, hoping, and planning to do with your next 20 years, now is always the best time to get started. Now. The world needs your gifts. Now. Muster your courage and step boldly where no women have ever gone before. There is no time to waste.
