Under the frigid, inky skies of the northern hemisphere, the three days of the winter solstice mark the longest, darkest night of the year. The celestial event climaxes in the lengthening of daylight and the return of the sun. This signifies the death of the old year and the birth of the new. Each solstice brings the promise of rebirth and the eternal return of spring.
